Braces for Adults
Braces are appliances commonly used in orthodontics to align and straighten teeth. This is done to improve the functionality and aesthetic of the patient’s smile and to help improve their overall dental health.
Types of braces
At Braces & Faces Orthodontics, we specialise in two main forms of fixed brace; traditional metal braces and clear ceramic braces. Both deliver exceptional results under the guidance of our specialist orthodontist, Dr Salima Visram.
From minor misalignments to more serious dental issues, each of our solutions can be tailored to your needs.
Metal Braces
Fixed metal braces are one of the most common types of orthodontic treatments we offer, and are usually the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “braces”. Small metal brackets are attached to the front of your teeth and connected by a very thin metal wire. This wire applies gentle pressure to your teeth to help guide them into their optimum position.
How do they work?
Fixed metal brackets are glued to the front surface of your teeth and are linked together by a thin wire, known as an archwire. This wire runs between the brackets and is held in place by small elastics. The archwire moves the teeth by applying gentle and gradual pressure to them.
Our Specialist Orthodontist believes that they achieve a high degree of control over the final positioning of the teeth, giving them their status of the most tried and tested, traditional brace.
What are the benefits of metal braces?
- Tried and tested: an incredibly successful method of orthodontic treatment
- Used to fix all types of orthodontic cases, from crowding, spacing and over/under bites.
- Limited impact on your lifestyle, although some dietary changes are required
- The most affordable orthodontic treatment option

Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces allow you to achieve the same results you see with traditional metal braces but with a more discreet look.
How do they work?
Ceramic braces work in the same way as a metal brace, with the use of brackets and wires. However, instead of visible metal brackets, they are made of clear ceramic, making them less visible. There is also the additional option of aesthetic white archwires, as well as transparent elastic bands. Overall, this makes ceramic braces a more discreet alternative to the reliable metal brace.
What are the benefits of ceramic braces?
Fixed ceramic braces provide you with all the same clinical advantages as traditional metal braces:
- They are an effective method of orthodontic treatment
- They can be used to fix all types and severities of orthodontic need
- Limited impact on your lifestyle, although some dietary changes are required
- They are a more affordable orthodontic treatment option
Their added advantage is their aesthetic nature which when compared to other clear appliances on the market, makes them great value without compromising the result.
